OpenAI concludes its latest funding round, raising $6.6 billion

OpenAI announced it has successfully completed a funding round, raising $6.6 billion and achieving a post-money valuation of $157 billion

OpenAI announced it has successfully completed a funding round, raising $6.6 billion and achieving a post-money valuation of $157 billion, as reported on October 2.

This funding will enhance OpenAI’s ability to advance AI research, expand computing infrastructure, and develop solutions for complex challenges. Thrive Capital led the round, with significant contributions from Microsoft, Nvidia, and SoftBank.

OpenAI’s valuation has surged dramatically, increasing from $29 billion in 2023 to $80 billion in early 2024, largely due to the popularity of ChatGPT, which has 250 million weekly active users.

The company anticipates revenues of $11.6 billion by 2025, up from $3.7 billion in 2024, despite expecting a $5 billion loss this year due to high operational costs, particularly for Nvidia GPUs essential for AI model training.

Despite its rapid growth, OpenAI faces financial challenges, including the high costs of running its AI models and reliance on substantial investor funding, which raises concerns about long-term sustainability.

Additionally, the company has experienced internal changes, with the recent departure of key executives, including its CTO and research chief.
