Updated September 2026: the original version of this guide had one particularly large problem: it told UAE drivers to install Dubai Drive, even though RTA discontinued the Dubai Drive app on 31 January 2025 and moved its services into the RTA Dubai app.
The old guide also treated four apps as mandatory infrastructure, described the Parkin app as the primary way to pay Dubai public parking, and explained Abu Dhabi’s Darb gates as though they all followed one peak-hour model. None of those statements is current. Dubai parking can be paid through several official channels, and two Abu Dhabi Darb gates introduced in May 2026 operate 24 hours a day.

First Correction: Dubai Drive Is Gone
RTA discontinued the Dubai Drive app on 31 January 2025. Its driver and vehicle services were integrated into the RTA Dubai app.
RTA currently describes RTA Dubai as its one-stop digital platform for roads, traffic and transport services. Current app functions include parking services and permits, driving-licence renewal, vehicle-test appointments and other driver/vehicle services. RTA’s own 2025 migration notice specifically said Dubai Drive services including vehicle registration, parking payments and Salik balance top-ups had moved into RTA Dubai.
So a 2026 guide should not tell a new driver to download Dubai Drive “within the week.” If you still have an old Dubai Drive installation or find an outdated guide linking to it, use the current RTA Dubai app instead.
RTA Dubai: The Main Dubai Driver-Services App
For a Dubai-registered driver or vehicle owner, RTA Dubai is the broadest current official app to start with. RTA says users can sign up securely with UAE PASS and access traffic, transport, parking, licence and vehicle services in one platform.
That does not make every separate RTA-related app obsolete. Salik still has a dedicated app for toll-account management, nol Pay has dedicated nol functions, and S’hail remains the mobility/journey-planning product. The useful distinction is by task rather than a mandatory download list.
Salik: Register the Vehicle, Then Keep the Account Funded
Dubai’s Salik system is barrier-free. A Salik tag/account is used to charge the applicable toll when the registered vehicle passes a Salik tolling location.
The dedicated Salik app currently lets users check balance, recharge an account, activate a Salik tag, view registered vehicles and recent trips, download statements and manage Salik fines. Those functions are useful if you drive through Salik regularly, but the app is not the only official way to manage the account.
The original article said an unfunded or unregistered crossing immediately “generates a violation instead of a toll.” That skips the current grace periods. Salik’s published terms say an insufficient-balance violation is issued if the pending amount is not cleared within the applicable five-working-day grace period. For an unregistered vehicle/tag, the published framework gives 10 working days to register and settle the outstanding toll before the unregistered-plate violation is issued.
The practical advice remains the same: activate the correct vehicle/tag and keep enough balance before driving. But the legal/payment mechanics should be described accurately rather than making every missed deduction sound like an instant fine.
Salik Variable Pricing: Current Standard Hours
Salik’s variable road-toll pricing took effect on 31 January 2025 and remains the current standard structure outside Ramadan-specific timings.

On Sundays, except public holidays and events, Salik’s published standard tariff is AED 4 during the chargeable periods and zero from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM. Ramadan uses a different time structure, so check Salik’s current tariff page when driving during Ramadan rather than carrying normal-year hours into that period.
If your journey time is flexible, the tariff can be one factor in when you travel. Do not treat the AED 2 difference as guaranteed “savings,” though: a detour, different route, parking cost or extra travel time can easily matter more than one toll crossing.
Parkin: Useful App, Not the Only Way to Pay Dubai Parking
Parkin Company PJSC operates Dubai’s public paid-parking portfolio under its concession arrangement. Parkin launched its dedicated mobile app in January 2025, and the app now supports functions including purchasing and extending parking tickets, auto-renewing tickets, seasonal cards, Parkin-wallet top-up and paying or disputing parking fines.
The old article called the Parkin app “the primary way” to pay public parking. RTA and Parkin documentation show a broader payment ecosystem. Current official channels include the RTA Dubai app, SMS, WhatsApp, parking meters and other digital/payment methods in addition to Parkin’s own app.
So you do not need to install Parkin merely to legally park in Dubai. It can be convenient if you frequently use Dubai public parking or want Parkin-specific wallet, ticket, seasonal-card or fine functions.
Dubai Public Parking Has Peak and Off-Peak Pricing
Dubai’s variable public-parking tariff took effect in April 2025. Parkin’s published structure distinguishes standard and premium spaces.
Peak periods are currently 8:00–10:00 AM and 4:00–8:00 PM, excluding Sundays and public holidays. During peak periods, standard parking across the public zones is AED 4 per hour and premium parking is AED 6 per hour. Off-peak pricing follows the relevant zone’s standard tariff structure.
That means the old sentence “premium zones cost more at busy hours” was broadly right, but drivers still need to read the actual sign/zone classification. Do not assume every space in an area is premium merely because the neighbourhood is busy.
Plate entry remains important regardless of payment channel. Confirm emirate, plate category/code, plate number and parking zone before paying.
Darb: Abu Dhabi Tolling Changed in May 2026
The original guide described Abu Dhabi’s Darb toll system as one uniform barrier-free peak-hour network. That became incomplete after two new gates opened in 2026.
For the established Darb gates, Abu Dhabi Mobility currently publishes a charge of AED 4 per crossing during the standard morning period of 7:00–9:00 AM and evening period of 3:00–7:00 PM, except Sundays and official holidays.
However, on 4 May 2026 Abu Dhabi introduced two additional Darb gates:
- Al Qurm toll gate on Wahat Al Karama Street at the entrance/exit of Sheikh Zayed Street; and
- Ghantoot toll gate on Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Street in Ghantoot.
Abu Dhabi Mobility says these two gates operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and charge AED 4 per crossing. That is a materially different charging pattern from the older peak-period gates.
The current Darb pages also state that the old daily and monthly caps have been removed for chargeable peak-hour crossings. Drivers who remember an older capped system should not budget using those former limits.
Darb and MAWAQiF: Same Abu Dhabi Mobility Ecosystem, Different Services
Abu Dhabi Mobility lists the Darb application as one official way to pay MAWAQiF public parking. MAWAQiF also supports other payment channels, including mobile payment, rechargeable cards and parking machines.
So “Darb handles Abu Dhabi parking” is useful shorthand, but the app is not the only legal payment channel. And toll registration and parking payment should not be described as though one balance or one setup automatically covers every situation unless the current account screen confirms it.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi Toll Accounts Are Separate
A driver regularly travelling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi needs to understand both toll systems. A Salik account does not replace Darb registration, and a Darb account does not fund Salik.
That matters even more in 2026 because the Ghantoot Darb gate now operates 24/7. A Dubai-based driver who rarely enters central Abu Dhabi could still encounter an Abu Dhabi toll on the inter-emirate route depending on the journey.
What About S’hail and nol Pay?
They are current RTA apps, but they solve different problems.
S’hail is focused on multimodal journey planning and mobility services, including public transport and ride options. RTA announced another S’hail development roadmap in July 2026 as part of its effort to consolidate mobility services.
nol Pay is the dedicated app for nol functions such as topping up and checking card balance, buying travel passes and managing supported family nol cards.
A person who only drives may rarely need either. A driver who also uses Metro, bus or other public transport may find them useful. Again, the right tool depends on the task.
Do Not Turn App-Store Complaints Into Robius Findings
The previous version said store reviews showed recurring OTP failures, delayed top-ups and difficult plate edits across these apps. Those may be genuine individual complaints, but Robius did not publish a controlled review sample or quantify how common they were.
App-store feedback can be useful for spotting issues to test. It should not be converted into a product-wide claim without documenting the version, date, platform and sample. For current operational problems, check recent reviews and then verify whether the authority/operator has acknowledged an outage or issue.

The Bottom Line
The old guide’s biggest irony was that a July 2026 article warning readers about outdated app guides recommended Dubai Drive, an app RTA had discontinued in January 2025.
The current setup is simpler. RTA Dubai is the main Dubai driver-services app. Salik’s dedicated app is useful for toll-account management. Parkin’s app is optional because Dubai public parking has multiple official payment channels. Darb is the Abu Dhabi toll platform and a MAWAQiF payment channel, but the 2026 Al Qurm and Ghantoot gates now charge AED 4 around the clock rather than following only the older peak-hour model.
Install what matches your route, verify your plate and account status, and use the current authority/operator pages for toll and parking tariffs before relying on an old “must-have app” list.
