Over 7 million email addresses from OpenSea users were leaked
In June 2022, OpenSea, a leading NFT marketplace, experienced a significant data breach. An employee from Customer.io, which manages OpenSea’s email communications, leaked over seven million email addresses belonging to OpenSea users.
Initially, OpenSea alerted users about the breach, but the complete list of affected email addresses was only made public recently. This leak poses a risk as scammers may target millions of users.
The leaked data includes emails from many prominent individuals like founder and ex CEO of Binance CZ and companies in the crypto sector, making them prime targets for fraud:
@cz_binance Email addresses are also among them :-) Remember the attack on the OpenSea mail service provider in 2024 that led to the leakage of emails? The leaked email addresses have now been fully publicized after multiple disseminations. Please be aware of the risks associated with phishing emails and other potential cyberattacks!

Scammers often impersonate trusted sources to trick people into revealing personal information. In 2024 alone, phishing attacks resulted in over $1 billion in losses, highlighting the severity of this issue. The OpenSea breach could exacerbate the situation.
To protect themselves, users should adopt strong and unique passwords for each account. Utilizing a password manager can help keep these passwords secure and organized. Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) provides an additional layer of security, with authenticator apps being safer than SMS-based methods.
Users must remain vigilant against unexpected emails or messages, particularly those requesting personal information or containing suspicious links. Keeping devices updated with the latest software is also crucial to address security vulnerabilities.
This incident underscores the importance of data protection, especially within the cryptocurrency community. While OpenSea is collaborating with law enforcement to investigate the breach, users must stay alert and adhere to best practices for online security. The leak serves as a critical reminder of the need to safeguard personal information in the digital space.
